Classical Tradition and Christianity. Genre Topics in Martyrial Literature
Main Article Content
At the time of the origins of Christianity, classic patriarchal values were still in force, considerably limiting women's participation in religious activities. Against this backdrop, the notable presence of female figures in martyrdom narratives stands out, as these women are not recorded in other literary genres of the time. However, their numbers are always smaller than those of men. Martyrdom literature reveals differences of genre between male and female accounts, evident in the arguments and the literary clichés. This study aims to categorise the most common female topoi, which are largely derived from classical sources, in order to identify any gender biases.
