Abstract

: Judo has played a fundamental role in the development of the sport in Spain, especially since its introduction in the 1950s. Over the years, judo has evolved from being a little-known discipline to becoming one of the main martial arts in the country. In the first decades, judo in Spain focused on the training of judokas and the creation of clubs and federations, promoting its values of discipline, respect and self-improvement. As time went by, Spanish judo gained international prestige, standing out in European and world competitions, and achieving important results at the Olympic Games. As regards women's judo, the Spanish Women's Championships consisted only of demonstrations, but over time they began to be organised in competition format. In addition, they were not held at the same time as their male counterpart until 1987. This article analyses the evolution of judo in Spain, in terms of licenses and practitioners, paying special attention to the incorporation of female judoka.
