Fray Luis de León. Theology and Literature

To mark the 500th anniversary of the birth of Fray Luis de León, we aim to examine his theological contribution and the literary dimension of his work. There is no doubt as to the literary significance of this theologian from Salamanca, yet the importance of his theology has not been as widely recognised. An in-depth examination of his theological thought and an exploration of its relationship with beautiful literary expression can help us to better understand and promote the brilliant figure of Fray Luis de León.

This leads us to a question of enduring relevance: the relationship between theology and literature. The practice of theology involves a literary form through which thought is expressed. Whilst the language proper to theology is argumentation based on reason and is situated in a sphere always close to philosophical reflection, there are theological contents that lend themselves to other forms of expression. In various forms of literature (poetry, novel, theatre, music, cinema) we find ways of reflecting on the mystery of God and the meaning of faith. For this reason, the dialogue between theology and the various literary arts is enriching both for theology and for the understanding of literary works that deal with theological themes or include elements of theology.
