Abstract

This study focuses on the synthetic presentation of the Law of Moses in Philo of Alexandria’s Hypothetica (7.1-20), with the aim of analyzing the laws included and their points of contact or differences in respect to the exposition contained in the author’s legislative treatises, On the Decalogue and On the Special Laws 1-4, as well as to other writings from the Exposition of the Law. Through this comparative analysis, we will examine the selection of the laws, the way they are organized, and the possible motivations or objectives of this presentation. In contrast to critical stances that deny the authenticity of the treatise, we will try to demonstrate that the particular characteristics of the legislative summary are motivated by the context and apologetic aim of the writing, but they do not hinder from recognizing multiple contacts with other Philonic texts and with problematics and interests which are central in his thought.
