Abstract

Despite progress in gender equality, all societies are still organized hierarchically on the idea of the superiority of the male. Women continue to be conceptualized and represented as inferior and naturally different from men. The different cultures are founded on the real and symbolic oppression of the female population. This violates the principles of equality, freedom, and justice. Therefore, feminist theory aims to deconstruct the prejudices  inherent in women’s submission. The concept of gender appears as an analytical category to contribute to this work of deconstruction. In the present work, a critical analysis of this concept is performed, as well as of the main  philosophical reflections on it to show its relevance in the study of inequality and the development of emancipatory theories.
