Abstract

This contribution, after examining how the relationship between theology and philosophy, and in particular the reflection on the knowledge of God by human person during his/her life, is one of the most significant theoretical issues discussed by the commentators of the works of Thomas Aquinas, proposes some ‘investigations’ and illustrative insights on the sources that concern the question 12 (Quomodo a nobis Deus cognoscatur), and particularly the article 12 (Utrum per rationem naturalem Deum in hac vita possimus cognoscere) of the I Pars of the Summa Theologiae, in the works by various authors of the so-called ‘second Scholastics’, especially Iberians (Dominicans, Jesuits and from other Congregations).

The structure of the I Pars, and in particular the first questions on the divine essence, shows a particular link between q. 2 (An Deus sit) and q. 12; the subsequent adoption of a subdivision into tractatus and disputationes, with the use of sections dedicated to ‘De visione Dei’, from one side clearly enriched the amplitude and the speculative attention on this issue, on the other side it has gradually decreased the awareness about the original scheme. With advantages and disadvantages that have not failed to produce during the time their effects.
