EDITORIAL GUIDELINES.

I. Guidelines for Submission of Papers

1. Type of paper

The Revista Española de Derecho Canónico (hereinafter REDC) publishes the following types of scientific work:

Articles. Academic studies of a scientific nature.

Documentation: The "documentation" consists of a commentary on a text of the Magisterium, a Decision or a Sentence, which is attached to the official text of the document; it is a shorter work which will be evaluated by two members of the Editorial Board.

Reviews: The contribution in the "Reviews" section consists of a substantiated critical commentary on a recent publication.

2. Language

Papers may be written in Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and English.

3. Format, support and structure of the papers

Papers must be original works. They shall combine solid argumentation with accessible language.

Articles: should be submitted according to the indications of the journal form. Two files should be sent for each article:

One entitled "full article" which will include:

• Title and English translation, author's name and surname, academic degree, current position, institution to which he/she belongs, e-mail and postal addresses;
• Abstract and Keywords with their translation into English;
• The body of the paper.
• Another file entitled "article for review", which will contain:
• The title, abstracts and keywords in the original language and in English, and the body of the paper.
• This second copy will avoid any kind of clue that in any way reveals the authorship of the manuscript to the reviewers.

The journal publishes mainly in Spanish, but exceptionally accepts papers in other languages, mainly Italian, Portuguese, French and English.

Articles should not exceed 8,000 words, including the abstract and notes (the list of bibliographical references is not included).

The presentation of the manuscript will have the following structure:

Metadata:

• TITLE: in capital letters and bold. In the language of the article and in English.
• Name(s) and surname(s) of the author(s) [if there are several authors, indicate who is responsible for the correspondence]. Institution to which the author(s) belong(s); ORCID of the author(s); e-mail and postal contact address.
• Abstract: between 100 and 150 words, in the language of the article and in English.
• Keywords: between 4 and 6 (in alphabetical order), in the language of the article and in English (Keywords). They must be different from those appearing in the title.
• Body of the paper.
• Acknowledgements or acknowledgements (if any).
• Bibliography cited, indicating, whenever possible, the DOI.
• The originals should be presented single-spaced, with Times New Roman 12 in the body of the text and 10 in the footnotes. Sections should be numbered as follows:
• First level: 1., 2., 3... and in small caps.
• Second level: (a), (b), (c) ... and italics;
• third level, without number or letter and in normal font.
• Notes are numbered continuously, in correspondence with the numbers in the text.
• Bibliographical citations will follow the journal's rules, which can be consulted below in the section "citation rules".

Any data or ideas taken from another author should be cited appropriately. When citing texts in a language other than that of the manuscript, these should be translated. All textual quotations must be enclosed in inverted commas. If the text of the quotation is long (more than three-four lines), it will be placed in a separate paragraph in smaller type, with line spacing difference, and without inverted commas.

Documentation: For the presentation of the manuscript of the commentary, the same criteria apply as for articles, except for the length, which in this case should not exceed 4,000 words.

Reviews: Together with all the data that allow the book to be identified, the author will present his or her commentary, which should not exceed 2,000 words.

4. Submission via the Online system

Papers should be submitted via the Open Journal System (OJS), which can be found on our website (https://revistas.upsa.es/index.php/derechocanonico), through the link Send an article.

5. Peer review process

On receipt of an article, the Editor of the REDC will make an initial assessment of the manuscript and will appoint two potential reviewers advised by the members of the Editorial Board.

The evaluation will be external and anonymous and will be carried out by two specialists in the subject of the article (Double blind peer review). The author may recommend or refuse potential reviewers in order to avoid biased criticism for or against.

Articles solicited by the Journal, as well as papers submitted in the "Documentation" and "Reviews" sections, will not be subject to peer review, but must be approved by two members of the Editorial Board.

On the basis of the reports received, the Editor will determine the suitability for publication. Positive peer review does not commit the Journal to publish the text.

Once the article has been accepted, the author will be informed and the expected date of publication will be communicated.

The author will receive the proofs of the article and will have one week to correct typographical and minor errors. No substantial changes may be made to the text.

The collections of Decretals are cited with the respective abbreviation followed by the numbers indicating the book, title and chapter: X.1.5.3 (Decretals of Gregory IX); In VI 1.5.3 (Liber Sextus of Boniface VIII); Clem. 1.5.3 (Clementine Decretals); Extravag. John XXII 14.1 (Extravagantes of John XXII, which are not subdivided into books, but only into titles and chapters) and Extravag. comunes (for the common Extravagantes).

1.12. Corpus luris Civilis:

Dig. 4.5.1. (adding one more digit of the law if it is divided into fragments). Inst. 4.1.1. Cod. 5.7.1. (Codex Theodosianus is cited in the same way, except for the initial acronym which is CTh.). If a law is subdivided into several fragments, a further digit is added, e.g. Dig. 50.12.1.1.1; Nov. 100.4.1.

1.13. The two Codes of Canon Law:

1.14. Second Vatican Council:

Use the common acronyms (LG, GS, AA ...) followed by the number of the document to be alleged (AA 12).

2. RULES OF STYLE:

2.1. Font:

Originals must be submitted in electronic format (MS Word), using "Times New Roman" font, in the following sizes: Title: 14; Abstract: 11; Text: 12; Footnotes: 10. The title of the paper and author's name, as well as the following terms: "Resumen", "Abstract", "Palabras clave" and "Keywords", must be in bold typeface only. Italics should be used when using terms or phrases in a foreign language, as well as in Latin (including abbreviations that correspond to the latter language).

2.2. Paragraphs:

Paragraphs should be justified and should be spaced 1.5 spaces apart, with no extra spaces between paragraphs. The first line of each paragraph should be indented, as should the first line of each footnote.

2.3. Structure:

The structure of the paper may allow a maximum of three levels. Footnotes should be footnoted in the text in superscript Arabic numerals, without the use of parentheses. They should be written in 10-point format and single-spaced.

When the citation is repeated for the second consecutive time, Ibid should be used. When the citation is repeated for the second (and subsequent) non-consecutive times, the author's name and o.c. should be used.

If the author is cited in several different works, the first words of the previously cited work should be used after the author's name.

Id. ("by the same author") should be used to cite the author referred to immediately above.

Loc. cit. ("in the place cited") should be used to list on the same page a work cited earlier, with different references in between.

Vid. (vide) will be used for a citation already referenced, in order to avoid repetition.

Passim ("here and there") should be used when it is impossible to mention all the pages from which an author's ideas are taken.

Apud ("cited by": a quotation of quotation) should be used when citing a document not directly consulted, but cited by another author.
